Afghan-French-German Ongoing Energy Projects
The Afghan-French-German Energy Initiative was born at a side-event of the 2004 Renewable Energy conference in Bonn, Germany and signed in Kabul on May 14, 2004. There, it was agreed upon establishing a close cooperation between the three governments aimed at improving access to electricity of rural population in Afghanistan. Representatives of the three countries, including then- Deputy Minister of the Afghan Ministry of Energy and Water, Dr. Ghulam Jelis, signed the agreement to put in place different projects to reach the objectives: ?[?] The Afghan-French-German Energy Initiative aims to improve the energy access for the rural population in Afghanistan through trilateral coordinated action.
The main components are:
Strategy development for sustainable energy utilization in rural Afghanistan
Energy efficiency in buildings and promotion of solar architectural design
Improvement of non- electric household energy supply (cooking, heating)
Mini and micro hydro power promotion and
Encouraging private sector participation.
Since foundation, the AFGEI has successfully cooperated in rural energy supply and energy efficiency:
Three Renewable Energy Information Centers established
Information provided to more than 1,000 people
More than 150 engineers and technicians trained in solar technology and energy efficient building technologies
Renewable energy systems worth 100,000 US Dollars disseminated
News, information and awareness brought to about 3,000 people through the tri-monthly AFGEI Newsletter, brochures and posters
Three micro hydro power stations (100 to 400 kW) for productive use running
264 buildings insulated
170 passive solar houses built
Energy efficiency cell inside the National Environmental Protection Agency created.
